No Signal
The “No Signal” scene is a peculiarly modern invention and one more likely to work with American audiences, who would be familiar with decrepit cell phone coverage, whereas even the developing world often has cell phones that work everywhere, from mine shafts, to subways, to (most certainly) remote forests stalked by inbred sociopathic killers. It’s unclear whether, as cell-network coverage improves and Verizon fills in that charming little map of theirs, Americans will continue to accept this already exhausted trope.
